Employees at Switzerland's Lonza— the chemical division of Alusuisse- Lonza Group—are fond of pointing out that in 1897, chemical companies were founded at both ends of the famed Simplon Tunnel through the Alps between Switzerland and Italy. This enabled the companies to take advantage of hydroelectric power to produce basic chemicals from feedstocks coal and calcium oxide. The Italian company went out of business in the 1950s. The Swiss company was Lonza—named after the tributary that flows into the Rh?ne near Visp—which is celebrating its centennial this summer.
